So this is the first in occasional posts designed to share information and hopefully get you curious about additional ways to nourish and take care of your body, mind and spirit. I may cover many topics, however much of it will center on foods and herbs, with the overall goal to support you in maintaining a healthy lifestyle and a general sense of well-being.
First let’s deal with how to pronounce it! AÇAÍ (A ▫ SA ▫ Ē, long e sound, like tree)…Wikipedia has a recorded pronunciation. Although often referred to as a berry, it’s actually a drupe. The fruit is harvested from the Açaí Palm grown in the Amazon River basin.
Açaí is one of the touted superfoods. Okay, so what exactly is a superfood? Superfoods are nutrient-rich foods, usually high in antioxidants as well, considered to be especially beneficial for health and well-being. Açaí is high in anthocyanins and flavonoids, powerful antioxidants. It also contains essential fatty acids and plant sterols. Antioxidants devour free radicals; essential fatty acids promote healthy cell function and impact many areas of general health; plant sterols promote cardiovascular health, particularly impacting LDL cholesterol.
